A case study of Primary Progressive Aphasia: improvement on verbs after rTMS treatment.

This case-report shows that high frequency repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (hf-rTMS), applied to the left prefrontal cortex, may improve the linguistic skills in Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). The patient's performance was evaluated on a battery of language production and memory span tasks, before and after two hf-rTMS treatments and one SHAM treatment. We observed a significant and lasting improvement of the patient's performance on verb production following the application of hf-rTMS versus Baseline and SHAM conditions. Electroencephalographic alpha activity modulations induced by breath-holding in apnoea divers and non-divers.

Little is known regarding cortical responses to sustained breath-holding (BH) in expert apnoea divers. The present study therefore investigated electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha activity and asymmetries in apnoea divers (experts) compared to non-divers (novices). EEG of 10 apnoea and 10 non-divers were recorded in the laboratory for either four minutes or for two minutes of BH. Alpha activity and alpha asymmetry (i.e. hemispherical EEG differences) were calculated and compared between expertise level and BH duration. Revisiting the left convexity hypothesis: changes in the mental apparatus after left dorso-medial prefrontal damage

It has been 15 years since Kaplan-Solms and Solms published their Clinical Studies in Neuropsychoanalysis, where they proposed a neuroanatomy of the mental apparatus. One of their main observations was that damage to certain areas of the left prefrontal cortex (PFC), particularly those related to expressive language (Broca’s area), did not generate changes in the mental apparatus. However, a limitation of their model was that it did not include patients with damage to other areas of the left PFC. Abstract Selective deficits in producing verbs relative to nouns in speech are well documented in neuropsychology and have been associated with left hemisphere frontal cortical lesions resulting from stroke and other neurological disorders.
